Well this all makes perfect sense. What a useful chat. Now I know I made the right decision to put his government conspiracy theory down to some self generated angst. My stomach growls and I begin to wonder how long it takes to cook a dinner, and where on earth Jo has got to. I also realise that strangely, I haven’t heard from Dad. I should call him, but interrupting Zara’s flow is almost impossible.

‘Where was I? Oh yes, Horatio...When Inigo was seventeen he started college and so Hero left and went to work in surveillance; some stuffy office job that he simply hated. But they remained very close. Horatio had become one of the family. Then a few years ago, a LOSER killed an innocent member of the public. Being who we are, I decided that we all needed protection. Visible bodyguards are all good and well, but they’re almost always too close to the situation to pre-empt an attack. So Edward and I contacted the agency for Shadows for us, and naturally, we asked Horatio to come back and Shadow Inigo. He’s not a young man now of course, but his improvements make him perfect for Shadow work. Not surprisingly, the agency has a number of ex-military on their books. Did both your parents work?’ She asks, out of the blue.

‘Yes they did. But there was a period when my father couldn’t find a job so he was home a lot then.’

‘And now you’re the breadwinner. You’re father was a Ministry man, was he not?’

‘Yes he was.’ I wonder if Jo told her that or if she looked me up and found out for herself.

‘It was terrible what Myers did to those who challenged his policies. Losing all his Points must have made life very difficult for the family.’

‘Yes, it did.’ That’s an understatement. But I don’t expect a woman in her position to fully appreciate the implications of having no medical backup whatsoever.

‘You’d think that now people get the idea, that a balanced diet is the answer, that they might lower the tax on ‘bads’ once again?’

‘No one thinks that balance is the answer. The general consensus, and more to the point the evidence is that some foods damage the body so you should never, ever eat them.’

‘But what’s life without a little sweet treat now and again? That’s what the Ministry preached, is it not? That was the message they tried to get across?’

‘Well, the Ministry didn’t just argue for the right to eat ‘treats’. It was about the right to chose; to self regulate which was as good as removed when the tax was increased.’

‘I was only a child at the start of the riots so I remember very little. But I’m sure you’re right; most people misunderstood the cause. The public saw it as a company of chefs who wished to continue poisoning the nation. Terribly frustrating for them I should imagine, when all they were trying to do is stop the government treating grown-up, taxpaying citizens like children.
